Math Challenges

Our 3rd Graders will be busy this year practicing their multiplication facts.  One of our most valuable tools that we use in our classroom is ALL-STAR MATH.  Students will drill each other on their particular # that they are working on for that day.  Everyone starts with a Red Star and begins on the number 2 and works their way up to 12.  Once they pass their 12's, they get a new colored star and begin the process all over again but with less time on the clock.  See the table below to see how this process works.

Students are strongly encouraged to practice their math facts every chance they get!

Fantasy Football Math

This is one of the most fun and challenging events in our ALL-STAR classroom.  Students will work in teams to create a fantasy football team from the NFL.  They will go through a drafting process in which they have a salary cap and must choose players from different positions.  The players all have different money values attached to them.  Once the students have successfully created a team that falls within their salary cap, they get to calculate the points that their players accumulate each week.   The students will be using a variety of the 3rd grade math curriculum including:
  • Mean, median, mode, and rangepe.jpg
  • Converting fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Area and perimeter
  • Probability
  • Graphs
    • Circle graphs
    • Stem and leaf plots
    • scatter plots
    • box and whisker plots
  • Rounding whole numbers
  • Expanded notation
  • Least common multiples and greatest  common factors
We will post the weekly winners on the website as well as the current standings for each team.
